It seemed like the 2020 season would never arrive…first the season was delayed because of COVID-19; then Mother Nature threw us another curve with Hurricane Sally cancelling the first game against the Milton Panthers. But, Navarre would finally take the field on September 25th as they travelled to Pace.

The Raiders would get on the board first as Preston Penton connected from 29 yards out with eight minutes to go in the opening quarter. Box Score
Crestview…14 0 0 0 – 14
Navarre…..21 24 7 0 – 52

The Raiders (6-4, 3-3) needed to win this contest to have any hope of making the playoffs. Unfortunately, the win was not enough as Navarre fell percentage points behind the Bulldogs.

Crestview got on the scoreboard first with a 2-yard Taylor Scarborough run with just over six minutes to go in the first. The Raiders would strike right back as Marlon Courtney III would connect on a 40-yard pass to Tyler England. Navarre would grab their first lead of the night when A.J. Arno broke off a 47-yard run for a score with a little over two minutes to go. Crestview didn’t take much time off the clock to tie it back up on a Scarborough 25-yard touchdown run within a minute. The wild first quarter would come to end when Courtney found Arno on a 49-yard pass…Navarre 21-14 after one.

The second quarter was all Raiders as they ran off 24 straight points. Xayvion Thomas hauled in a 18-yard pass from Courtney with 10 minutes to go. Then, Preston Penton added a 25-yard field goal. Courtney followed with two more touchdown passes to England (32, 17) to close out the scoring in the first half…45-14 Navarre.

The Raiders added their final touchdown in the third as Courtney hit England with a 30-yard pass with seven minutes. A running clock ensued and the Navarre defense took care of the rest…Final 52-14.

It was a record breaking night for two Raiders, as Courtney set a new touchdown passing mark with six. Which was incredible because he only completed nine passes in the game. He finished the night, 9-13 for 221 yards. England broke the touchdown receptions mark in a game with four. He hauled in five receptions in the game for 129 yards and also had three interceptions on defense (which tied a record).

Jeffery Mattox led the Navarre defense with 10 tackles (6 solo/4 assists/sack/TFL) and Mekhi Domino added 7 tackles (5 solo/2 assists). The Raiders forced five turnovers on the night (4 interceptions/fumble) and shutout the Bulldogs the last three quarters.

Box Score
Navarre…3 3 15 10 – 31
Leon…..14 0 0 14 – 28

The Raiders (5-4, 2-3) found themselves in a District 1-7A battle at Gene Cox Stadium in Tallahassee against the Lions. With the victory, Navarre’s long trip back home was a lot more enjoyable.

Leon’s Steven Bivins got the fireworks going at 8:25 when he broke off a 56-yard touchdown. Three and half minutes later, Preston Penton booted his first of three field goals on the night, this one from 23 yards. On the ensuing possession, Paxton Tomaini scored from the one and the Lions went up 14-3 after one.

The only points of the second quarter, went to Penton as he added his second field goal (23) of the half to cut the lead to 14-6 going to the break.

Navarre would tie it up 6:01 of the third as Jaydin Antonio had a 5-yard touchdown run and were successful on the two-point conversion. The Raiders would grab their first lead of the night when Jaden Rivera scored on a 28-yard run. 21-14 Navarre after three.

Penton’s third field goal of the night (42 yards) gave Navarre their biggest lead of the game, 24-14. Tomaini would cut the lead back to three, as he scored on a 15-yard run at 5:27. On the Raiders next possession, Rivera started to his right, but cut back to the left and outraced the Lions defense to the end zone from 42 yards out at 2:47. Tomaini would lead Leon on another scoring drive, ending with a 11-yard pass to Semaj James (who had 11 receptions on the night for 131 yards) with 50.7 seconds left on the clock. Raiders held on…31-28.

Navarre had trouble getting their passing attack going, so they relied heavily on their running game. Both Rivera (19 carries, 212 yards) and Antonio (20 carries, 153 yards) had career best performances. Xayvion Thomas was the leading receiver with three grabs for 66 yards.

Bailey Huston led the defense with 9 tackles (6 solo/3 assists) and Kobe Johnson, Jeffery Mattox & Devin Wright added 7 tackles each. Connor Eastwood & Grady Kelly each had two sacks as the Raiders accumulated six sacks in the contest. Penton went 2-2 on extra points and 3-4 on field goals.

The Raiders (3-1, 0-1) had not faced an opponent from Tallahassee since the heartbreaking 34-33 triple overtime loss to Lincoln in the 2010 Region Finals. On this Thursday night, they found themselves up against the Trojans once again.

Navarre scored first as Marlon Courtney III connected with Xayvion Thomas on a 39-yard scoring play at 7:32 of the first quarter. Lincoln would answer at the 6:28 mark when Marko Skarica hauled in a 56-yard catch from Chris Beard…7-7 after one.

Courtney put the Raiders back on top when he scampered in from the three at 8:59 of the second. Lincoln would respond with two touchdown passes, Beard to Sage Ennis (Clemson commit) for 27 yards and Perry Fisher to Ennis for 64 yards…Trojans 21-14 at the half.

The lone touchdown in the third quarter came when Beard threw his third touchdown pass of the night, 22 yards to Dominic Larry…28-14 Lincoln.

The Trojans stretched that lead out to 21 when Ennis ran one in from four yards out. Navarre would get on the board one more time, as Jaydin Antonio found the end zone from the 6…Lincoln 35-20.
